History :
From the origin to Louis XIII
The first Versailles mention appears, in 1038, by the abbey Saint-Père de Chartres charter. Hugo Versailliis is one of the signatories. The parish foundation established to Saint-Julian goes back to this era. The Versailles Lords belong directly to the King. Their modest castle dominating the church and the village stands on the southern mound slope upon which will be built the future castle. The castle will be rebuilt after the war of100 years by the Soisy’s lord. It is composed of a principal main building and a wing in return, proceeded of a great door framed by two turrets.
The field, which belongs to Martial de Loménie, finances secretary of Charles IX, is enlarged in 1561 and achieves 150 hectares. The owner is murdered to the night of the Saint-Barthelemy, in August 24, 1572.The Florence originality Albert de Gondi purchases the field by 35.000 pound. And soon named Duke of Retz and Marshal of France, he receives in Versailles Henri III and his brother-in-law, the King of Navarre. The future Henri IV stays in Versailles from July 7 to 9, 1549, one month before he became King of France. His hunt passion, shared by his successors, will determine the Versailles fortune. Sometimes the King will be accompanied by the young Dauphin. As soon as he became King, frequently Louis XIII will return hunted in Versailles, and then he will purchase the field of Versailles to Jean-François de Gondi, Paris archbishop and Albert’s heirs, April 8, 1632.
